Good Afternoon! It’s Friday, December 6, 2024. This afternoon, we’re covering the proposal to sell the Coggeshall School, active shooter training, how the city of Newport is turning to artificial intelligence to engage with constituents, a public challenge to design a wrap for a CYBERBEAST, and much more more.

Quick Editor’s Note: What’sUpNewp has been in the process of changing our newsletter client and CRM this week (longer story on the decision for another time). Please let us know if something doesn’t look right regarding the newsletter, your supporter status, or anything else—email [email protected].

As a reminder, our morning newsletter is delivered at 7 am every weekday, and our afternoon supporter-only newsletter is delivered at 4 pm every weekday. With your continued support, we hope to expand our morning newsletter to publish every morning really soon (that’s a hint about becoming a supporter if you’re not already).

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and feedback during this upgrade.

WHAT TO KNOW

According to City Hall staff, the elevator at Newport City Hall will be back in service by Wednesday, December 11. This means that the first meeting of the new Newport City Council will take place in the Council Chambers (instead of at Pell Elementary School) that evening.

At that meeting, the Council is set to review a purchase and sale agreement for the former Coggeshall School property. The proposed $1 million deal with BCM Realty Partners, LLC would transform the site into apartments aimed at providing workforce housing opportunities.

Portsmouth’s Town Council is set to hold a public hearing on Monday to review a sound variance application from SouthCoast Wind Energy, LLC, for a wind energy project. The meeting will take place at the Portsmouth Middle School Auditorium.

The Newport Car Museum is giving car enthusiasts a chance to leave their mark on its newest addition – a Tesla CYBERBEAST. The museum has launched a design challenge, inviting people of all ages to create a custom wrap for this electric vehicle.

Starting tomorrow, Giusto is launching a lunch menu available every Saturday and Sunday from 11 am – 2:30 pm. The menu will include their Italian take on a Bahn Mi sandwich, the Calabrian Pork Bahn Mi, as well as the Giusto Burger with Guanciale jam, an item from Giusto’s opening menu that was a guest favorite, and the Crispy Fish Sandwich.

Tomorrow marks 83 years since 2,403 service members and civilians were killed at Pearl Harbor. Flags across our nation will fly at half-staff on Saturday from sunrise to sundown to honor National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.

According to RITBA, the westbound off-ramp to East Shore Road (located just after the RITBA offices) will be closed on Tuesday, December 10
