2️⃣ Middletown, Newport councils to discuss school regionalization Monday

Three years after Newport voters narrowly rejected a proposal to create a regionalized school district with Middletown, elected officials from both communities will meet Monday to discuss reviving the effort. The Middletown Town Council and Newport City Council will hold a joint workshop at 5:30 p.m. at the Wyndham Hotel, 240 Aquidneck Ave., to review two Newport resolutions related to school regionalization and the formation of an Academic Integration Advisory Committee.

Under the proposal, Newport and Middletown would share one superintendent and one finance office, while teachers and students would remain in their respective communities. The arrangement would increase state reimbursement for new school construction from 52.5% to 80.5%, benefiting projects including the new Rogers High School and Pell Elementary School. In November 2022, Newport voters rejected a similar administrative regionalization proposal by a margin of 52.8% to 47.2%.

3️⃣ Portsmouth cruises past RMT 5-1 in injury fund game

Patrick Chouinard scored twice, including the lone goal of the third period, to lead Portsmouth to a 5-1 victory over RMT in an injury fund game Sunday at St. George's School. Portsmouth jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period on goals from Hadrian Dougherty and Becket Snyder.

RMT got on the board early in the second period when Ethan Labolita scored at 4:12 off an assist from Nathan Carpenter to cut the deficit to 2-1. Portsmouth answered quickly with goals from Hunter Roberts and Chouinard to push the lead to 4-1 heading into the final period. Chouinard capped the scoring at 3:52 of the third period.

4️⃣ Toy drive, live music and free meals planned for Newport Skatepark event

A major community event combining a toy and food drive, live music and skateboarding will take place Sunday, Dec. 14, at the Newport Skatepark on John H. Chaffee Blvd. Omen's Holiday Toy & Food Drive and Bowl Bash runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is free and open to all ages. Organizers are encouraging attendees to bring food or toy donations.

In addition to collecting toys on site, organizers will distribute free holiday meal bags containing a ham and sides, each intended to feed a family of four. The meals are available no questions asked, and sign-up is open until all slots are filled.

5️⃣ Women's Fund of Rhode Island marks 25 years of advocating for systemic change

The Women's Fund of Rhode Island was founded 25 years ago by the late Simone P. Joyaux, a globally respected fundraising mentor and social justice advocate. The Rhode Island Foundation partnered with Joyaux in 2000 to launch the organization with a clear mission: close the opportunity and equity gaps facing women and girls. Today, WFRI continues that work through research, advocacy, grant-making and strategic partnerships that drive systemic change.

Former Newport City Councilor Angela Lima left elected office last year to join WFRI as policy and advocacy program director. "In my work at WFRI, I've had the privilege of supporting advocates, training future policymakers, and helping build the next generation of leaders who will shape our state," Lima said. She highlighted a stark statistic: women-led organizations receive only 2% of philanthropic funding nationwide.
